KHARTOUM

Dates extended!

2025 |  80min. |  A Film by Anas Saeed, Rawia Alhag, Ibrahim Snoopy, Timeea M. Ahmed & Phil Cox | Arabic with English subtitles

  • In 2022, four Sudanese filmmakers, along with a British director-writer, began filming  the lives and dreams of five very different citizens in Khartoum:

Street boy LOKAIN (12) and his best friend WILSON (11) embark on a mission in Khartoum’s rubbish dumps to buy two beautiful shirts.

KHADMALLAH (28) a single mum and tea vendor engages her daily clientele in gossip and cardamom coffee whilst studying math to start her dream business.

JAWAD (30) is a Sufi Rastafarian resistance volunteer who rides a motorcycle and protests for a civilian government against the military.

Civil servant MAJDI (45) escapes office life by racing pigeons with his son.

When filming started, the Sudanese were faced with a military leadership that had brought down the previous civilian government. Soon, however, war broke out between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, displacing over ten million people.

The filmmakers and participants escaped to East Africa but continued their innovative cinematic storytelling, combining animation, green screen reconstructions, and documentary ‘dreamscapes’ to tell their stories.

Filmed on location with donated iPhones, the four emerging Sudanese filmmakers  (Anas Saeed, Rawia Al Hag, Brahim Snoopy and Timeea M. Ahmed) capture the stark realism of one of Africa's great cities as it is consumed by turmoil and war.

MOTHERS OF CHIBOK

2024 |  88min. |  A Film by Joel Kachi Benson |

  • In a small village in Northeast Nigeria, a community of mothers forge a path forward after the tragic events of April 2014 when their daughters were kidnapped by Boko Haram. The film follows four mothers over a farming season as they fight for their children and their futures. The media may have moved on from this once global topic, but the women continue to persevere in the face of great tragedy. Mothers of Chibok paints a visceral portrait of courage, faith, and the enduring power of hope.

MOTHER CITY

2024 |  103min. |  A Film by Pearlie Joubert & Miki Redelinghuys |

  • Mother City is a deeply human, often heart-breaking and at times humorous look at the global politics of urbanism.

Against the backdrop of a country celebrating three decades of democracy, Mother City exposes the deep fault lines that still exist in South Africa because successive governments since 1994 have not offered solutions to the most urgent and explosive issue of land and ownership, rendering generations of working class people homeless.

Cape Town, known as the Mother City, lies resplendent between the iconic Table Mountain and the icy Atlantic ocean. A narrative documentary, Mother City charts a defiant war against government and property developers in one of the world’s most unequal cities.

Our story starts in 2016 when the government decides to sell the old Tafelberg School in Sea Point, earmarked for affordable housing, to a private developer. This careless disregard of the desperate housing needs of Capetonians gave birth to a social justice movement, “Reclaim the City” (RTC) who decide to occupy two disused state owned buildings in prime locations. By 2024 the stakes cannot be higher - local authorities are determined to evict the more than two thousand people now living in these buildings.

The story is told by Nkosikhona Swartbooi, RTC organiser and activist. For him the battle for housing is deeply personal. Raised by his grandmother in a shack in Khayelitsha, he saw the humiliation she faced as a domestic worker in Sea Point. Mother City documents, over six years, how he grows from a young activist to a father trying to balance his political work with family commitments. It is a classic David and Goliath battle as activists take on property power and politics in a city still disfigured by spatial apartheid.
