Lusophone Week

SCREENING: MAY 7th - May 10th 2024.

A cinematic journey through the culture of Portuguese-Speaking Countries in collaboration with the Embassies of Angola, Brazil, Mozambique and Portugal

  • BRAZIL - Tues, May 7th

Black Rio! Black Power!, directed by Emílio Rodrigues, 70’ (2024)

Soul music dances gave rise to the Black Rio Movement after they became spaces for the political affirmation and resistance of the young black community in Rio de Janeiro in the 70’s. The film reveals just how important the music scene was in fighting for racial equality during Brazil’s military dictatorship and, subsequently, its influence on Hip Hop and Funk music; as well as the impact black pride had on newer generations and the aesthetical valorization disseminated throughout past decades.

    MOZAMBIQUE - Wed, May 8th

The Sound of Masks, directed by Sara Gouveia, 70’ (2018)

Atanásio Nhussi, a compelling storyteller and legendary Mapiko dancer, takes us on a visually dramatic journey through Mozambique's past and present.

    PORTUGAL - Thurs, May 9th, 7pm

Variações, by João Maia, 108’ (2019).

António Variações was a unique man, born in a small village in Amares, north of Portugal. Unhappy with his work at a local factory, he moved to Lisbon to stay with relatives. But he was different, and he wanted more. To see the world he emigrated, starting to work as a barber. But his love for music and performance was so strong that he came back so he could sing in his own language, even facing prejudice. Variações is a story about music and about fighting for what we believe.

    ANGOLA - Fri, May 10th 7pm

Kizombo without Boundaries, directed by Baptista João, 60’ (2019)

Kizomba without Boundaries is a documentary on the course that this Angolan style has followed during the past few years in Europe and the Western world, particularly in Portugal, Spain and France, being these three the current countries of reference when it comes to the offer and demand and the spreading of this dance within Europe.
